About Embedded Acoustics

Embedded Acoustics was founded in 2010 by experts in speech, hearing and acoustics from TNO (the Netherlands organisation for applied scientific research). The founders of Embedded Acoustics are known for developing the Speech Transmission Index, and were among the first to develop Active Noise Reduction systems for hearing protection (to name but one thing).

Embedded Acoustics is the owner and developer of the Bedrock Audio product line, and developer of many cutting-edge miniaturized electronic devices for speech, audio and acoustics. We carry out specialist R&D and design projects for customers worldwide, from local SMEs to Fortune 500 companies.

Sander van Wijngaarden

Sander van Wijngaarden obtained his Masters degree in applied physics from the Delft University of Technology in 1996. His specialization was Perceptual Acoustics. Sander then joined the Speech & Hearing group at TNO, where he worked on a broad range of R&D projects, mostly on hearing protection and speech intelligibility. He obtained his PhD from the Free University of Amsterdam in 2002. His PhD thesis ("The intelligibility of non-native speech") is based on work done at TNO.

After gaining experience as a project manager for several years, Sander was appointed team leader of the Speech & Hearing group in 2002. He took on a new challenge in 2006, when he joined a different division of TNO as a Business Developer. In 2007 Sander was appointed Department Manager in the Chemical and Biological protection department. Sander finally decided to leave TNO to co-found Embedded Acoustics in 2010, returning to his technological roots.

Jan Verhave

After obtaining his degree in electronics engineering in 1989, Jan joined the Phonetics department of the University of Amsterdam to work on a European "Esprit" project on speech technology. In 1993, he accepted a research associate position at TNO in Soesterberg. At TNO Jan specialized in real-time low-latency hard- and software for acoustic signal processing. Applications that Jan worked on include 3D audio, the Speech Transmission Index and Active Noise Reduction.

Jan was lead engineer and software developer in many development projects, including the first IEC-compliant STI measuring software application and several generations of Active Noise Reduction headsets (analog and digital). Jan was also the primary developer of STIPA and was involved in several commercial implementations of STIPA. He has been the driving fore behind most STI-related innovations over the last decade.

Matias Slagt

After graduating from the University of Amsterdam in 1994 Matias has held various commercial and managing positions within private, governmental and non governmental organizations, mostly defense related. Matias’ focus has always been to seek out new market opportunities and turn these into success for the organizations he was employed for or which he represented.

Joining Embedded Acoustics was a logical next step within the relationship between Embedded Acoustics and him. In the past Matias has already been involved in the design and development of some of Embedded Acoustics products for the defense and security market.

Madelon Pijnenburg

Madelon is Office Manager at Embedded Acoustics. She makes sure that the day-to-day activities around our office run smoothly and efficiently. Madelon processes our incoming and outgoing invoices, makes sure that our shipments arrive with our customers on time, and that our technical reports and papers are presentable. Madelon is also the only one who knows to brew drinkable coffee with our office coffee maker.

Feel free to contact Madelon with any of your questions - if she does not have an answer straightaway, she will direct you to the right person. Madelon is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Michiel van Leeuwen

In 2005, Michiel van Leeuwen obtained his masters degree in Physics at Utrecht University. Soon after that, he started working in the field of acoustics. First at M+P - consulting engineers in Vught, where he worked on road and railway traffic noise. His specialty was automatic analysis of large datasets and designing new measurement methods. Now, at Embedded Acoustics, he combines his experience in software development and acoustics.

Pieter Postma


Having been an enthusiast about everything that has buttons and displays since childhood, Pieter Postma decided to study electrical engineering. He obtained a bachelor degree from The Hague University in embedded systems and hardware prototyping. During his studies, Pieter gained experience with various companies, such as Stork, Getinge, Skydec and Thales. He did his graduation project with Embedded Acoustics.  In his spare time, Pieter enjoys photography, hiking and winter sports.

Jorge Martínez Castañeda

Jorge currently works as Software Enginner at Embedded Acoustics.

Prior to this he was a postdoc at Delft University of Technology working in projects sponsored by Huawei and Google. He developed algorithms for real-time, spatio-temporal room response simulation and beamforming algorithms for ad-hoc teleconferencing systems using smartphones.

Jorge obtained a Master degree from the Autonomus University of Barcelona in 2007. In 2008 he started his PhD studies in Delft University of Technology.  He conducted research on the field of multidimensional Fourier processing of room transfer functions in massive MIMO systems and adaptive algorithms for multichannel acoustic echo cancellation. He defended his PhD thesis with title "Low-complexity computer simulation of multichannel room impulse responses" in 2013.

Stefan Oud

In 2015 Stefan Oud had finished his master degree in experimential physics at the University of Leiden. In his spare time he was interested in programming and he learned his skills autodidactically. He has also taught himself some basic knowledge of electronics. These practical skills combined with physics and system thinking, come to use in his work for Embedded acoustics.

Stefan is Embedded Systems Specialist at Embedded Acoustics.

Miguel Asselbergs

Miguel has always been interested in technology, especially electronic devices. Since young he has been tinkering with electronics, therefore he chose to study electrical engineering. In 2016 Miguel obtained a bachelor degree from The Hague University in Embedded  Systems. Miguel did his graduation project with Embedded Acoustics. Having worked as a IT Specialist he has acquired the skill of systematic thinking, which comes to use in his work.


Miguel is Hardware Engineer at Embedded Acoustics.

Jeroen Janmaat

Jeroen recently joined Embedded Acoustics as an underwater acoustics specialist. He mostly works on the realization of noise mitigation systems for use with off-shore pile driving.

He studied Applied Physics at the The Hague University of Applied Sciences and took courses at the Delft University of Technology. From 1999 through 2012 he worked at the sonar department of TNO in The Hague and from 2013 until 2016 at the Faculty of Aeronautics Engineering of the Delft University of Technology. At both institutes he was involved in various aspects of underwater acoustics, from the development of remote sensing techniques for sediment characterisation to benchmarking of sonar models and conducting sea trials.
